ARTIST STATEMENT
"How does moving to a new place affect one's sense of belonging?"
My practice responds to this question and involves capturing a place not just as a physical space but as a living, breathing entity shaped by its inhabitants. I capture the rhythm of human experience through the elegance of lines, revealing characters shaped by society, surroundings, and emotion. I aim to explore the intricate relationships between people and the land they occupy, their stories, and the imprints of their surroundings. The influence of a city or place inspires my work, shaping my perspective to explore new dimensions of human stories.
Each location has its character, culture, and essence, which I translate through lines, colours, and layered compositions. In this process, I investigate the concept of belonging and inhabitance, delving into how individuals connect with the land they call home. By observing and recording everyday moments, this connection encompasses memories, culture, and a sense of belonging or displacement.
Growing up in Goa, India, I immersed myself in local folklore, village life, and a deep affection for animals. These elements laid the foundation for my approach, blending personal reflection with cultural insight. Now, living in London, I draw inspiration from its bustling urban environment, transient interactions, and fast-paced, structured culture where the constant presence of people contrasts with a sense of detachment.
Through painting, film, and video projects, I explore to create layers of experiences shaped by the cultural interplay of the places I inhabit and my connection to them.
